Senftner Receives Honor From Coaches Association

Sully Buttes head girls basketball coach Mark Senftner has been named the 2017 Coach of the Year for the winter sports season--that from the South Dakota High School Coaches Association, based in Sioux Falls. Senfter, who has coached at Sully Buttes school since 2005 has brought his girls basketball team to the state tournament ten times--and has won four state championships, along with two runners up.
Other nominees include Brandon Kandolin from St. Thomas More, Kent Kolsrud from Sioux Falls O'Gorman, and Nick Mayer from Harrisburg.
There were coaches from the Pierre area that were also nominated for their respected sports, including Govs wrestling coach Shawn Lewis, who won the coaching title last year, and official Rebecca Uhrig.
Senftner is also in the running for the National Coach of the year for girls basketball, nominated by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. He, along with eight other nominees will find out the selection Wednesday, June 21st at a banquet in East Peoria, Illinois. Nineteen reconized sports categories will be announced that evening.
Senftner, from McLaughlin, along with his wife Lynn--who is from Winner, have been involved with teaching and other activities at the school for twelve years. An awards banquet will be held July 11th at the Highland Conference Center in Mitchell to honor those involved.
