SDHSAA Board To Meet Tomorrow
Monday, April 17, 2017
Tomorrow the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors meeting will be held. There will be many items that will be up for vote, but one of the most talked about items are the Sweet 16 format for Class B basketball and volleyball.
In the spring conference the Class B athletic directors were in favor of the mover by a 46-29 vote. There are nine members of the board and they need a majority vote to get it to pass. If this is passed the format could be put in place for the 2017-18 seasons. This would eliminate district play and go straight to region play among eight regions. Once each region plays down to two teams, they would be re-seeded 1-through-16 and the winners of those Sweet 16 games would qualify for the state tournament.
The board will also vote on a Sweet 16 in Class AA basketball and volleyball. At the AD’s conference that passed 10-8. The top 16 teams would be based on their regular season seed points, the teams seeded 17 and 18 will not make the playoffs. This would also eliminate play in games as well.
