Highway 34 to close Monday east of Howes
Friday, August 8, 2014
Starting Monday, those traveling Highway 34 between Pierre and Sturgis will have to find another route.
The state Department of Transportation, as planned, will close a 2 ½ mile section of Highway 34 east of Howes starting Monday. That area, which is halfway on the most direct route between Pierre and Sturgis, will be closed to traffic for about five weeks.
Crews have been working in that area for several weeks to repair damage caused by heavy rain. In a press release, the dam grades for Howes Lake and Lake Buffalo have been eroded. The contractor will replace the pipes through the dams, repairing the erosion and replacing the embankment and road surface at both locations.
There will be detours on both sides of the closure, but the detour covers 76 miles. The DOT suggests that travelers consider alternate routes when possible.
