Monday, March 20, 2017
The Pierre Governor Boys basketball team competed in the AA state basketball tournament this past weekend. It would be a pretty successful tournament as they would finish in fourth and go 1-2 on the weekend.
On Thursday night they took on Rapid City Stevens and the Govs were able to win that game in exciting fashion winning in 2 overtimes 76-75. Peyton Zabel was able to hit a floater while driving the lane as time expired. Peyton Zabel led the way in that game as he had 31 points and Brad Dean had 21. The Other Gov that was in double figures was Conner Campbell who had 10.
They would move into the semi-finals on Friday night and take on Aberdeen Central and play them for the fourth time this season. The Govs would go down early and would have to battle back having a 32 point fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as they would drop this game 58-52. Brad Dean would lead the way with 25 points and Peyton Zabel was able to put in 17.
With the lost the Govs would move into the third/fourth place game on Saturday afternoon taking on Sioux Falls Lincoln who they had not played all year. The Govs would have a tough game and would drop this one losing 67-31. Peyton Zabel was the only one in double figure with 11, Brad Dean had six and Sam Edman had four.
Sioux Falls O’Gorman would go on to win the AA boys basketball state tournament over Aberdeen Central.
