Empty Bowls Event Raises Awareness About Food Insecurity
Friday, February 17, 2017
Nearly 200 people gathered Thursday evening at Faith Lutheran Church for the Empty Bowls event to benefit Feeding South Dakota.
The event featured a meal of donated soups from several local restaurants, and all the funds raised go to the Feeding South Dakota mobile food pantry. Local celebrities served the soups.
Feeding South Dakota Central Operations Manager Russ Hofeldt was elated with the turnout for the first ever event.
Hofeldt says that the mobile food pantry serves those individuals in central South Dakota that are food insecure. Hoefeldt says in central South Dakota alone, food insecurity is a major issue.
After the event Thursday, residents were able to take home a decorated empty bowl, which symbolizes the issue of hunger in rural South Dakota.
