Pierre Govs And Lady Govs Got The Track Season Under Way This Past Weekend

The Pierre Governor and the Lady Govs got their track and field season under way this past weekend. The meet was held at the indoor facility on the SDSU campus.

The Govs had a champion in Connor Campbell who was in the high jump and he had a leap of 6’4. Warrant Gerreau was able to get third in the long jump with a distance of 40-02.25. In the shot put Levi Stoltenberg was able to get forth with a toss of 46-08.25.

With the Lady Govs Hannah Shaffer finished in fifth in the girls 3200 meter run in a time of 12:24.36. Hunter Martell was able to finish in fourth in that same race. Danni Ullman was able to finish in fourth for the Lady Govs in the triple jump with a leap of 31-10.

As a team the Lady Govs were able to finish in 16th out of 20 teams with 20.5 points. The Govs were able to finish in 12th in the boys standings as they had 27 total points.

They will return to Brookings this coming weekend to compete in the Brookings Invite in the SDSU indoor facility.

Three Class Shootout Was This Past Weekend

Lady Gov Hallie Jerome had 13 points and five rebounds as the class AA All Stars defeated the A All Stars 88-62 in the Girls three Class Shootout Saturday in Salem. Karlee Kinney of Tea Area was the Class A MVP as she had 17 points, three rebounds and four assist.

The Class B Girls were able to defeat the Class AA All Stars 88-65. Myah Selland of Sandborn Central Woonsocket was named Class B MVP with 24 points and six rebounds. Sully Buttes star Chloe Lamb had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Raquel Wietjes of Sully Buttes was able to get 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

On the boys side the Class A All Stars dominated over the AA All Stars 141-102. Brad Dean from Pierre was able to score 11 points in the loss. Brennan Carlson of Brookings was the AA All Star MVP with 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Class A All Stars were able to defeat the Class B All Stars in the next game 111-99. The B All Star was Levi Devries who was able to score 21 points and he also got 12 rebounds. Justice Morrison of White River was able to get 15 points and had seven rebounds.

USD's Chris Nilsen Summit League Indoor Field Athlete Of The Year

ELMHURST, Ill.–South Dakota freshman Chris Nilsen has been voted the 2017 Summit League Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the league’s head coaches as announced by the league office Friday.

Nilsen captured South Dakota’s second Division I national title by winning the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a clearance of 18 feet, 8 ¼ inches. The Kansas City, Mo., native also broke several records throughout the season. His best mark of 18-8 ¼ set a South Dakota and American Under-20 Indoor record. Nilsen broke the Summit League Championship record by winning in 18-5 ½.

The freshman standout was victorious at all seven meets he competed in during his first collegiate season, garnered a league record five Summit weekly awards and earned a spot on The Bowerman Watch List.

Nilsen acquired the Summit League’s ninth national title in track and field. South Dakota, with a pair of NCAA Champions since joining the league, is one of four Summit programs contributing to the total. Oral Roberts leads the league with three while former members Eastern Illinois and Southern Utah have two.

Nilsen becomes the second Coyote to capture the Summit’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award, joining 2015 winner Kyle McKelvey. South Dakota has totaled 13 Athlete of the Year honors since joining the Summit in 2012.

Post 8 To Have Pancake Feed Tomorrow

The Post 8 Baseball Board is pleased to announce and invite the entire community to their next Pancake Feed for 2017!

The feed will be held at the American Legion Cabin located at the end of main street in downtown Pierre on Saturday, March 25th.

They will begin serving at 7:00 AM and anyone arriving before 8:30 AM will not only receive a hot, delicious pancake and sausage meal prepared by the Post 8 Baseball Board, you will receive a complimentary one day free pass to any of the Post 8 tournaments held at the beautiful, newly remodeled Hyde Stadium this summer.

To receive the free pass you need only to show up before 8:30 AM and your name will be added to the early bird free pass list and then enjoy the hot cakes prepared and served by their extended Post 8 baseball family.

The Pierre Govs and the Lady Govs will get their track and field seasons under way Saturday. Both teams will be traveling to SDSU for the ESD Conference Indoor Meet.

The meet will start at noon. The meet will be in the SDSU Indoor Track/Field Facility.

Next weekend both teams will be back in action as they will travel back to the SDSU Indoor Track/Field Facility for the Brookings Invite. The Lady Govs and Govs will host their first home meet of the season April 4th as they will host the Bob Judson Invite starting at 1 pm.

HuntSAFE Classes Coming Up

PIERRE, S.D.--A HuntSAFE class has been scheduled at the Izaak Walton League Clubhouse in southeast Pierre. Classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on April 3, 4, and 6 and from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on April 8 at the Oahe Downstream Shooting Complex.

Attendance is required at all sessions. Registration is available at www.gfp.sd.gov/hunt-ed. For more information contact Karen Olson at 224-0269.

All young people between the ages of 12 and 16, as well as those who will turn 12 by Dec. 31 and who will hunt during the current year after Sept. 1 are required to successfully complete a HuntSAFE class and possess a HuntSAFE card while hunting. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children.

People wishing to brush up on their safe hunting skills are also encouraged to attend. HuntSAFE classes are sponsored by S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department as well as local community sponsors.

USD In First For Commissioner's Cup

South Dakota climbed into first place in The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup standings following the winter season with 57.5 points.

The Coyotes also hold the top spot in the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award standings with 38.5 points and are tied for second in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award standings with 19.0 points.

The Coyotes have won three Summit League titles in 2016-17 between women’s cross country, volleyball and men’s basketball. Cross country raced to its third-straight championship, volleyball won the regular season for the program’s first conference title in history and men’s basketball captured the regular season title for the first time in the Summit League.

South Dakota also finished runner-up in women’s indoor track & field and took third in women’s swimming & diving and men’s indoor track & field.

South Dakota captured its first-ever Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award in 2015-16. The Coyotes were third in the Commissioner’s Cup a year ago after posting the program’s highest finish of second in 2014-15.

The Hofteizer Brothers Named To All Conference Team

Stanley County Senior Damon Hoftiezer and his brother sophomore Brady Hoftiezer were named to the WGP All-Conference first team. Stanley County finished their season with an 11-10 record and lost in the first round of the district tournament. Congrats too these two on the all-conference honors.

Local Players Selected To The Three Class Shoot Out All Star Game

Pierre Govs Brad Dean and Hallie Jerome are set to play for the Class AA All Stars on Saturday at the three Class Shoot Out. The annual All Star game will be played at the McCook Central Auditorium in Salem.

The Girls All Star game will start at 2 pm. The Class AA All Stars will play the Class A All Stars followed at 3:45 with the winner of that game taking on the B All Stars.

The Boys All Star game will start at 5:15 pm and it will be the AA boys vs. the A All Stars. The winner of that game will take on the B All Stars.

Chloe Lamb and Racquel Weintjes of the back to back state champion Sully Buttes Chargers will be on the B All Star girls team. Justice Morrison from White River will also be in the game he will play on the B All Star team.

This will be the 30th annual All Star event and the games will be coached by coaches from Dakota Wesleyan, Mounty Marty and Presentation College.

Lincoln Jordre Name Class B Player Of The Year

According to Midco Sports Sully Buttes junior Lincoln Jordre has been named the Class B South Dakota player of the year. Jordre averaged 19.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The Chargers played in the Class B state tournament last weekend in Aberdeen and finished in third place. Congrats Jordre on this honor.
