Five Pierre Spring Baseball Players Named To All-Region Team

Five Pierre spring baseball players have made the All-Region team for 2017 according to Midco Sports Network.

Connor Gerber, Michael Lusk, Peyton Zabel, Spencer Sarringar and Nate Zimmerman all represent Pierre on the team.

Pierre qualified for the state tournament this coming weekend when they won their region tournament on Saturday. They were able to beat Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens in the championship game.

Pierre will either play at noon or 2:30 pm in their first game in state tournament on Saturday.

Coach Lewis Named Head Coach Of The Year

According to the Capital Journal head coach of the Pierre wrestling team Shawn Lewis has been named Head Coach of the Year for the State of South Dakota. This past February the Govs were able to win their third state championship in a row. Congrats to Coach Shawn Lewis on the honor!

Its Race Weekend At Oahe Speedway

Its race weekend this coming weekend at Oahe Speedway as they will be holding races on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Last year Oahe Speed way had announced that they would be closing after 11 years and earlier this year announced they will hold two race weekends.

Shootout races will be offered only on Saturday, Sunday point races will be held. Sunday there will be a big event called the “Showdown on the River” the stock and super stock racing will be going for $1,000 grand prize to the winner. Monday again will be point races for their seasons.

Gates will open every day at 8 am and qualifying races will start at 9 am with elimination races being at 1 pm.

Pierre Spring Baseball Advances To State Tournament

The Pierre spring baseball team is state tournament bound after winning the region tournament this weekend at Hyde Stadium.

Pierre was able to win their first game Saturday against Rapid City Central 11-0 to advance to the region championship game. They would play Rapid City Stevens in the championship and they would go on to win 9-0.

In game one on Saturday Garrett Stout would pitch a great game as he went five innings, surrendering zero runs, three hits, striking out five and walking zero. Nate Zimmerman had a great day at the plate in game one as he went 2-3.

In the championship game Peyton Zabel would be on the mound for Pierre and he pitched another great game going six innings, allowed zero runs, one hit and struck out six.

Pierre had 11 hits in the game and Michael Lusk, Spencer Sarringar, Garrett Stout and Zabel all collected multiple hits. Connor Gerber led the team in three runs batted in and went 2 for 4 on the day.

Pierre gets to the state tournament after winning the region tournament and will play in Sioux Falls this weekend.

10th Place Finish For Pierre Tennis At State Tournament

The Pierre Govs tennis team competed in the state tournament this past weekend in Sioux Falls. Pierre would have a good tournament coming in 10th place with a final team score of 224.

Sioux Falls Lincoln was able to win the team title with 740 teams points in second was Rapid City Stevens with 500 team points and in third was Sioux Falls Washington with 453 points.

The number one singles player for the Govs Kaden Height advanced to the fifth place bracket but lost 8-5. In flight two for the Govs Jace Wernsmann was able to get to the consolation final and lost that 8-4. Chris Rae in flight number three singles advanced to place seventh and eighth. Tate Johnson got into the consolation final in fight number five and would go on to lose that 8-6. Ryan Warne in flight six was not able to place.

In doubles Hight and Francesco Zago placed seventh and eighth. Flight two doubles Wernsmann and Rae was the only team to reach the consolation championship and they would lose that 8-0

Pierre Rattlers Win Season Opener

The Pierre Rattlers Amateur Baseball team opened their season with a 12 - 6 win over the Sioux Falls Saints on Sunday afternoon.

Five Pierre pitchers split the mound duties Harry Decker, Dalton Decker, Cooper Walton, Will Ellwanger & Allen Goodman during one 9 inning game - their combined efforts tallied 13 Sioux Falls strike outs while scattering 7 hits. Will Ellwanger picked up the win for the Rattlers.

Pierre's offense scored 12 runs on 15 hits - leading the way was Brian Graves with 4 hits (including 1 double), Cooper Walton with 3 hits (1 double & 4 RBI's), Dalton Decker with 2 hits, and Jordan LaBrie with a solo home run leading off the eighth inning.

The Rattler's next games will be in two weeks as they head to Sioux Falls for a weekend tournament.

Govs Tennis in 10th After Day One In State Tourney

It’s a good start for the Pierre Govs tennis team as they see themselves sitting in 10th place after day one of the state tournament in Sioux Falls.

The Govs were able to score 181 total teams points. Sioux Falls Lincoln is at the top as they have 390 team points in second is Sioux Falls Washington with 362 total team points and in third is Rapid City Stevens has 358 team points.

The number one singles player for the Govs Kaden Hight had the three seed and went 1-1 on the day winning his first match but losing his second match to Elliot Hartwig of Sioux Falls Washington 3-6, 6-1 and 12-10. Hight will be in the consolation championship today.

The only unbeaten doubles team for the Govs is their number one doubles team of Hight and Francesco Zago who were able to win their first match but had their second match suspended due to darkness and it will continue today.

Pierre Spring Baseball To Host Region Tournament Tomorrow

The Pierre spring baseball team will be in the region tournament tomorrow at Hyde Stadium.

Pierre will play the first game of the day at 11 am as they will take on Rapid City Central. Central was able to get to this game after beating Douglas earlier in the week in a play in game. These two teams have played each other this season as they played back on April 29th at Hyde Stadium. Pierre was able to win both games of the double header as they won game one 11-1 and game two 10-0.

Pierre is the number one seed coming into this tournament as they went 16-1 on the year.

The second game of the day is going to be Sturgis and Rapid City Stevens, which will start around 1 pm and the winner of the two games will play each other in the championship game at 3 pm.

All the Pierre games will be able to be hear right here on Today’s KCCR.

Lady Govs Finish Seventh In Brookings Invite

The Lady Gov golf team was in action yesterday as they traveled to Brookings for the Brookings Invite.

The Lady Govs were able to finish seventh in the 12 team invite. Sioux Falls O’Gorman shot a team total of 329 to beat runner up Aberdeen Central by 15 strokes.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Sophia Salter was able to win the individual title in a playoff as she shot a 79.

For the Lady Govs Shelby Guthrie shot an 85 and was able to place as she tied for eighth with three golfs. Annabelle Simpson shot a 88, Hallie Gronlund fired a 96 and Rilee Rowse came in with a 101.

The Lady Govs will now travel to Watertown on Monday to compete in the Watertown Invite.

Good Showing For Govs and Lady Govs Track and Field

The Govs and Lady Govs track and field teams had one last chance to qualify for next weeks state events. The Govs and Lady Govs competed in Huron yesterday for the Mark Wendeglass Invite.

Lady Govs Mac Rath was able to win the discuss with a toss of 117-11 and she was able to place third in the shot put. In the 400 meter dash Lady Govs Emily Mikkelesen and Sophie Stueven were able to finish third and fourth. Hannah Shchafer had a fourth place finish in the 800 meters and fifth in the 1600 meters. Addy Eisenbeisz was able to lead the way for the Lady Govs in the high jump as she finished third. Sophie Bullard was able to tie a school record in the pole vault with a 10-03. The Lady Govs were able to finish in fourth with 90 team points as Brookings was able to win the team title with 144.6 team points.

On the boys Frank Becker was able to get fourth in the 400 meters. Caleb Lusk was able to get second in the 800 meters and Vincente Ramirez was able to finish third in the 100 meters. Nate Zimmerman had a good day as he came in second in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. The Govs 4x400 meter relay team was able to get fourth. Thomas Pietz continues to perform well as he got third in the pole vault and Warrant Gerreau was fouth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. In the Shot Put Jack Maher and Levi Stoltenberg were fourth and fifth and Stoltenberg and Maher were third and fourth in the discus.
