Senate Bill 69 Is Going To South Dakota Voters

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Petitions were delivered to the Secretary of State's office Monday to refer Senate Bill (SB) 69, “An Act to revise certain provisions regarding elections and election petitions” and Senate Bill 177, "An Act to establish a youth minimum wage." to the voters of South Dakota.

All new laws passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor will go into effect July 1, 2015 unless the threshold of 13,871 petition signatures from South Dakota voters is met for each bill in question.

If the signatures are approved, SB 69 and/or SB 177 will be referred to the vote of the people in the November 2016 general election.

Referendum petitions for Senate Bill 69, “An Act to revise certain provisions regarding elections and election petitions” have been validated and filed with the SD Secretary of State's office.

This referendum petition will be Referred Law 19.

“Having a group of South Dakotans take a strong interest in our lawmaking process is healthy and positive for our state. The best government comes from an active and informed citizenry,” said Secretary of State Shantel Krebs

The petition sponsor for SB 69 and SB 177 is Aberdeen resident Corey Allen Heidelberger.

SB 69 and SB 177 were signed into law during the 2015 legislative session.

Board Reverses Decision On Renaming Harney Peak

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

A South Dakota board has reversed itself and recommended that Harney Peak not be renamed even though some American Indians may find it offensive.

The Board on Geographic Names earlier recommended that Harney Peak, in the Black Hills National Forest, have its name changed to "Hinhan Kaga (Making of Owls)."

Board members say there was no public consensus on a new name. At least two members of Gov. Dennis Daugaard's cabinet had opposed the proposed name change.

The state board's recommendation now goes to a federal board.

Harney Peak was named for Arm Gen. William S. Harney, who in 1855 led soldiers who killed Sioux Indians in Nebraska.

Leave Your Fireworks At Home If You Are Going To A State Park This Weekend

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

The upcoming Fourth of July holiday is a busy time in South Dakota's state parks and recreation areas. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks is asking state park visitors to leave fireworks at home.

According to Doug Hofer, state parks director, campgrounds are traditionally busy with campers and other visitors enjoying the parks during this time period.

“Combining fireworks and large numbers of people creates a dangerous situation,” said Hofer. “We appreciate it when visitors do their part to help keep the parks safe and fun.”

Discharging fireworks is prohibited on all lands owned or leased by GFP. The ban includes state parks, recreation areas, lakeside use areas, game production areas and nature areas. Discharging fireworks is also illegal within the boundaries of the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District, national forests and national parks in South Dakota.

For more information on the South Dakota State Parks, visit gfp.sd.gov or call 605-773-3391.
