Pierre city mosquito control efforts continue

Monday, June 30, 2014

Pierre city mosquito control efforts continue

More West Nile Virus-carrying mosquitoes are being found in Pierre, according to an official.

With the heavy rains and warm temperatures, more mosquitoes are hatching. City Parks and Recreation Division Director Tom Farnsworth says that means more mosquitoes.

Since early spring, the city has been doing its three-pronged programs – larviciding areas where mosquitoes breed, checking mosquito traps and fogging common areas and residential neighborhoods. Farnsworth says residents can help by taking steps to protect themselves.

And the West Nile Virus appears to already be in this area. State officials reported Friday that first human West Nile Virus case was reported in Hughes County last week. The victim was in the 20 to 29-age group and was not hospitalized.

Along with the potential fire hazard, Merriam says the other worry is danger to people, especially children.

Among the basic safety tips are: Follow the instructions on the product, avoid using fireworks in places where a fire could start and keep a source of water handy.
