Rangers Nip Capitals

On senior night at the Expo Center Saturday evening, the Brookings Rangers spoiled the party defeating the Capitals in their final home game of the season 4-2. Brookings held a 1-0 lead after the first period but 90 seconds into the 2nd period, Capitals forward Brandon Swenson tied the contest off a rebound. The Rangers scored late & led 2-1 after the second period.

Twenty-nine seconds into the third period Bo Atkins scored to knot the game at two. The Rangers would score two more goals in the third period to stay perfect in league play. The Capitals have now dropped four out of their last five league games dating back to January. The Caps hit the road this weekend, playing Brookings Saturday night & Watertown on Sunday.


Pierre Keeps Winning

The Pierre Governor basketball team extended their winning streak to five games on Friday night with a 78-64 victory over Aberdeen Central. The Governors opened the game on a 5-0 run then Aberdeen Central scored 12 straight points. The game featured multiple scoring runs but Pierre's run late in the first & fourth quarter was the difference.

Pierre led 46-30 at the intermission. Thoughts of a blowout was sifting through the crowd once the third quarter began but Aberdeen Central went on a 11-1 run to cut the deficit to single digits. In the final stanza, the Governors mustered up one final run, that was capped off by a Cooper Walton dunk, to secure the victory. Nick Rabern led the Governors with 19 points.

On Saturday the Pierre Governor basketball team raced to their six consecutive win, defeating Watertown 69-60. The defending Class AA state champions jumped out to the early 39-25 hafltime lead. Watertown would slim the deficit in the fourth quarter to six but Pierre was able to hold on for their 13th victory of the year. The Governors placed four players in double figures. Erin Severyn & Brevin Kaiser scored 14 points to lead Pierre on Saturday. The Governors hit the road for four consecutive games beginning Tuesday at Sturgis.


Lady Govs Sweep Weekend Action

 

The Pierre Lady Governor basketball team defeated Aberdeen Central 39-36 in a tight ESD battle on Friday night. Aberdeen Central & Pierre traded baskets back & forth Friday evening until Hallie Jerome hit a three point basket with 1:43 left to regain the lead for Lady Governors. Pierre would secure the win thanks to Sydney Plamer & Katie Berg's free throws down the stretch. Sydney Palmer led the Lady Govs with 22 points in the win.

On Saturday, the Lady Governors defeated the Watertown Arrows, 37-25 at the Riggs High Gymnasium. Pierre's defense was the story holding the Arrows to just two first quarter points. The Lady Governors led 26-11 at the intermission. For the second night in a row junior Sydney Palmer led the Lady Govs on the score sheet with 12 points. Pierre improves to 8-6 on the season & will host Sturgis on Tuesday night at the Riggs Gymnasium.



Pierre Wrestlers Place 10th @ Sanford Pentagon Tournament

 

The Pierre Governor wrestlers placed 10th overall out of 23 teams at the Sanford Pentagon tournament in Sioux Falls over the weekend scoring 104 points. The Governors placed only four wrestlers at the tournament. Sophomore Jebben Keyes was the Governors only champion of the tournament in the 120LB weight class. The Governors featured two runner up finishes from Austin Senger at 106 & Tanner Monfore at 132. Aric Williams placed 6th at 113 & Spencer Sarringer finished 7th at 138. The Governors will now focus on Brandon Valley Friday. A win for the Governors would claim a share of the ESD title for Pierre.


Shorthanded Lady Buffs Compete In Wall

 

The Stanley County Lady Buffalo gymanstics team finished 4th at the Wall invitational on Friday evening with a team score of 112.950. Regional foe Chamberlain won the overall event with a score of 127.500. The Lady Buffs were without senior leader Hailey Norman but others stepped in to fill the void. Stanley County sophomore Kelsey Vandenhemel was the best performer on Friday, finishing fourth in the all-around, fifth in both the floor & bar events, sixth in the beam, & seventh in the vault. The Lady Buffs begin postseason competition on Saturday with the regional event being in Wagner.


Pierre Spring Baseball Fundraiser  

 

The Pierre Spring baseball team will hold a fundraiser this evening from 5-9PM at Gators in the Pierre Mall. Pierre spring baseball team will begin their season on March 29th in Rapid City.

 


USD Softball Opens Season 3-0

South Dakota scored four runs on six hits in the fifth inning of a 4-2 win against Long Island Sunday at a tournament hosted by Central Florida. The Coyotes outscored their competition 14-7 in finishing 3-0 during their opening weekend.

Starting pitcher Madison Frain worked into the seventh inning to pick up her second win in as many starts. Long Island managed four singles off Frain – all in the first two innings. The Blackbirds scored an unearned run in the second inning and added a second run in its final at bat without recording a hit.

Frain and freshman Rachel Cue combined to throw 22 innings in three games in Orlando. They allowed five earned runs and three extra base hits – all doubles – while striking out nine. Opponents batted .238 against them. South Dakota next competes at a three-day tournament hosted by San Diego State starting Friday.

Pierre Gymnastics Score 6th @ ESD
  
The Pierre Lady Governor gymnastics team finished 6th at the 7 team ESD Conference meet on Saturday in Mitchell. Pierre finished with a score of 134.225. Mitchell won the ESD conference this year with a score of 148.775. For Pierre, 8th grader Sohpia Bullard best performances came in the All-Around & beam events finishing 6th overall. Junior Melissa Bobby placed 14th in the All-Around & in a three way tie for 6th on the beam.
