USD Moves Up To Number Four

Tuesday, October 10, 2017

(From the USD Sports Desk)

South Dakota football continued its ascent up the FCS Coaches Poll. The Coyotes, fresh off a 31-28 win against then-No. 3 Youngstown State on Dakota Days Saturday, are up two spots to No. 4 in the newest poll released Monday.

It marks the highest ranking for the program at the FCS level, and best overall since 1987 when USD was ranked No. 1 for the initial six weeks of the season.

Defending national champion James Madison (5-0) remains No. 1. North Dakota State (5-0) is No. 2. Jacksonville State (4-1), whose one loss is to Georgia Tech, is No. 3. The Coyotes leaped Wofford (5-0) which remained at No. 5. South Dakota State (4-1) at No. 7 and Youngstown State at No. 8 (3-2) give the Missouri Valley Football Conference four teams in the top-8. Illinois State (4-1) fell eight spots to No. 15 following a non-conference loss at Northern Arizona. Western Illinois (4-1) is up one spot to No. 18 after winning on the road at UNI.

South Dakota, 5-0 for the first time since 2005, hosts Indiana State (0-5, 0-2 MVFC) at 2 p.m. Saturday inside the DakotaDome. The Coyotes enter with the No. 1 offense in the nation at 537 yards per game. South Dakota beat Indiana State 33-30 in double overtime last season in Indiana.

Govs Football Defeats Mitchell

Monday, October 9, 2017

The Pierre Govs football team was in an old fashion ESD battle on Friday night as they traveled to take on number one Mitchell. The Pierre Govs would hold on for the win, winning 14-7.

The first quarter would be a defensive battle as nobody got anything going. In the second quarter Peyton Zabel would avoid a sack and throw a great pass to Garrett Stout in the end zone that made it 7-0. The Pierre Govs defense stepped up in a big way on Friday night four turnovers three of which in the first half.

The Govs would take a 7-0 lead into the locker room and their second drive of the second half Jack Maher would throw one up to Zabel in the back of the end zone to make it 14-0. Mitchell would answer back with a 28 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Kirks that made it 14-7 in the fourth quarter. Mitchell would get one last chance with a minute to go but the Govs defense held strong to win the game.

Pierre goes to 6-1 on the year as Mitchell drops to 5-2. The Govs will welcome Sioux Falls Roosevelt to town on Friday night at 7 pm. You can hear this game right here on Today’s KCCR.

Lady Govs Tennis Team Takes Sixth At State

Monday, October 9, 2017

The Pierre Lady Govs Tennis team finished their season taking sixth place at the State Girls Tennis Tournament held in Sioux Falls that ended on Saturday.  The Lady Govs scored a total of 305 points.  Sixth place is an improvement over last year’s seventh place finish. Coach Kerry Dilley said having two of the three doubles teams reach the quarter finals was the reason this year’s team finished one place higher than last year’s team.  Sioux Falls Lincoln won the State Championship with a total of 650 points.

Twenty-three schools were entered in the tournament.  Coach Dilley said the team’s sixth place plaque will be added to the school’s trophy case and will be a perpetual testament to the Lady Govs Tennis Team’s accomplishment in 2017.

The tournament was held at three different sites.  Due to rain, all the matches were moved to three indoor tennis court facilities for most of the Thursday’s and Friday’s matches.  Saturday, one round of matches had to be played indoors, but the rest of the scheduled matches were able to be played outdoors at McKennen Park as originally scheduled.

In singles the Lady Govs finished as follows:

            Flight #1          Chloe Ryan tied for 7th;

            Flight #2          Cassandra Ryckman didn’t place;

            Flight #3          Sydney Larson tied for 7th;

            Flight #4          Gracie Jones tied for 7th;

            Flight #5          Kailee Schultz didn’t place; and

            Flight #6          Sabrina Kintz finished in 2nd place

In doubles the Lady Govs finished as follows:

            Flight #1          Ryan/Ryckman tied for 7th;

            Flight #2          Larson/Jones placed 3rd; and

            Flight #3          Schultz/Kintz didn’t place

In the singles flight #6 Championship match, Sabrina Kintz lost in a hard fought match to Anni Cummings from Watertown by the score of 6-7 (4), 3-6.  Coach Dilley said that due to Sabrina’s style of play, all her matches last a long time.  In fact, when she played a Mitchell girl in the semi finals, one single point took over ten minutes before the point was decided. In the doubles flight #2 semi final match, Sydney Larson and Gracie Jones lost to a very good Rapid City Stevens team, but not without giving them a run for their money.  Pierre lost the match by the scores of 6-4, 2-6, 2-6.

Coach Dilley said much of the team’s success is due to his assistant coaches.  Matt Gill is a paid assistant coach and has exceptional abilities interacting with the girls as a coach, but also on a personal basis.  Dennis Ryckman is a volunteer coach, but puts as much time into all aspects of coaching as do Dilley and Gill.  Coach Ryckman worked primarily with the middle school girl tennis players, but assisted with actually coaching during varsity matches.  Dilley says he doubts any varsity coach has better assistant coaches that he has had.
